JMT Contributes to an Era of New Traditions

Franklin & Marshall Opening LEAD
October 21, 2017Location: Lancaster, Pennsylvania

JMT’s sports field designers and landscape architects were part of a multi-disciplinary team that designed Shadek Stadium at Franklin & Marshall College (F&M). The new stadium held its first game on Oct. 21, to kick-off, quite literally, their homecoming weekend. The new facility replaces the 122-year-old Sponaugle-Williamson Field, and is the anchor project for the development of F&M’s north campus in Lancaster, PA.

The team worked directly for the College and guided them through the various steps of the field design, including shock pad selection, turf selection, infill selection, field graphics, and field equipment.  JMT provided detailed design, specifications, and construction oversight of the new multi-purpose field, including the field’s base course, drainage system, surfacing, and infill placement during the duration of the project.

The new playing surface is the first field in the state of Pennsylvania with an envirofill infill system. The infill is an acrylic-coated sand that provides a firm, fast, and safe surface. The new stadium playing surface will be used primarily for football and lacrosse, however, it can also be used for soccer and field hockey.  F&M is the last Centennial Conference football team to convert to a synthetic turf field. F&M’s athletic director said, “For student athletes, the stadium will boost their experience, plus it should push prospective athletes to choose F&M.”
