Calverton Elementary & Middle School

Location: Baltimore, Maryland Client: Baltimore City Public Schools

JMT provided a unifying and innovative design for the Calverton Elementary/Middle School Media Center to address the diversified needs of its students.

Some elements of the design included:

  • A new stepped reading area for elementary-age students located in close proximity to the circulation desk and librarian's office.  This reading area is separated by glass from the adjacent computer work stations and has a lower ceiling than the primary reading room, making it a more intimate scale for the children of this age group.
  • On the opposite side of the library, the formerly enclosed conference room has been removed and converted into an open reference area for the older children, with computers located at an adjacent counter. Joining the two areas is the central reading room with a cathedral ceiling and clerestory windows. This space has been completely transformed by the removal of metal security grilles and replacement of yellowed plastic glazing, thus restoring the space into one filled with natural light.
  • A comfortable reading area with casual seating adjoins the windows overlooking the school's interior courtyard where overgrown vegetation has been removed, recapturing views to the tranquil courtyard.

Amenities include new voice/video and data access points for the ten new computer stations and work areas; new and restored wood millwork and bookshelves; mobile bookshelves; a new glass entrance with custom designed signage; a new circulation desk to provide visual control of all areas of the library from one centralized location; new projection screen and projector terminal; cabinetry with lockable storage and a new librarian's office.

All interior finishes were replaced with new floor tile, carpet, wood paneling, painted surfaces, ceilings and lighting. Central air conditioning was installed, allowing for the removal of unsightly window units. The existing facilities were assessed in accordance with current building codes and ADA accessibility. In addition to providing architectural and interior design services in house, JMT's MEP and structural disciplines provided quality control oversight of the work of their MBE and WBE consultants. The 4,500 square-foot project was completed within budget and on time for the opening of the school year.
