Hereford High School Systems Renovation

Location: Parkton, Maryland Client: Baltimore County Public Schools

JMT provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering associated with the systemic renovation and expansion of this school.

Baltimore County Public Schools performed a feasibility study for the systemic renovation of Hereford High School, located in Parkton, MD.  The feasibility study assessed the existing building's systems for lifecycle replacement and energy efficient replacement options. The renovation will consist of major improvements to the public high school, while occupied.

JMT provided engineering services related to mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection associated with the renovation and expansion the school. The renovation is based on the feasibility study, with the MEP portions conducted by JMT. The project, as managed by the architecture firm Rubeling and Associates, incorporates sustainable and energy-efficient building systems such as Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems (DOAS) with heat recovery and T-8/28 W lighting fixtures.

The project involves conversion of the existing school to an air conditioned facility.  This work involved replacement of existing ventilators and air handling units, and upgrades to the piping and duct insulation where necessary to support climate control.  Existing building exhaust systems will be replaced and a new building automation system will be installed.  A new chilled water system will provide cooling capability for the existing building as well as the proposed addition.  The heating system pumping system within the existing building will be modified to accommodate the new addition. It is envisioned that the existing boiler plant is of a sufficient efficiency to justify utilizing it to serve the proposed addition.  The existing science rooms will be converted to classrooms, which will require the demolition of special science facilities such as plumbing and exhaust systems.  The fire alarm system will be replaced with new addressable components and devices. The system will be designed/configured to handle the addition. Minor electrical upgrades associated with roof-mounted receptacles and GFI receptacles will be incorporated into the power/electrical design documents. 

The renovated school wings contain numerous efficiency features.  The new HVAC system was designed to be more efficient than the prescribed design standard.  Toilet room fixtures will be upgraded to include low flow systems.  Based on the lighting study conducted by JMT, BCPS changed its lighting standard for all new projects to a high efficiency T8-28W fixture.
