Subsurface Utility Designating, Locating & Plotting Services

Location: Statewide, Maryland Client: Maryland State Highway Administration

JMT provided complete subsurface utility designating, locating (test pits) and plotting services, statewide

This was our 5th consecutive open-end contract for the State Highway Administration's Office of Highway Development, Plats and Surveys Division.

Utility designating and locating is a cost-efficient way to map underground utilities during the design phase of a project, avoiding costly redesigns and delays during construction. Commonly referred to as Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE), JMT uses the ASCE Standard 38-02 guidelines for the collection and depiction of existing subsurface data. Our services for SHA include utility records research, utility designating, utility locating, surveying, and mapping/plotting.

Utility designating services include using geophysical methods to accurately designate utility lines prior to design services. The utility lines were surveyed and a Microstation design file generated for use by the designer.  Utility locating (test holes) were performed in areas where conflicts in the design existed and were completed using air-vacuum excavation.  Designated and located utilities were surveyed by the utility crews, using identical data collection methods as SHA field crews.  JMT also used GPS RTK surveys for collection of designated utilities. CADD design files were created for direct upload into SHA highway design programs.
