JMT Receives Four ACEC/MW 2025-26 Engineering Excellence Awards

Three JMT projects improving the transportation infrastructure in the Washington, DC region received honor awards, and a fourth received a merit award, during the American Council of Engineering Companies/Metropolitan Washington (ACEC/MW) Engineering Excellence Awards gala and holiday party on December 16, 2025, at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC. Our list of award-winning work in the greater DC region continues to grow!
Honor Award
Northstar Boulevard
This project, Loudoun County’s first design-build contract, is a 1.4-mile roadway extension in northern Virginia. JMT teamed with Shirley Contracting Company for the $170 million project, which included roadway on new alignment, a 270-foot-long bridge that threaded through tight utility corridors, and 10-foot-wide shared-use paths in each direction. We saved our client significant time and money by modeling using Open Roads Designer, which reduced materials costs, helped us manage vertical clearances, and improved constructability.
Honor Award
Columbia Road NW Bus-Bike Combination Project
JMT staff designed one-way protected bike lanes, concrete combination bus/bike platforms, concrete bus islands, and pedestrian refuge areas with neighborhood beautification measures along a one-mile segment of Columbia Road NW from 16th Street to Connecticut Ave NW. The project is part of moveDC, the District of Columbia Department of Transportation’s (DDOT) multimodal long-range transportation plan, advancing the District toward meeting Vision Zero.
Honor Award
moveDC Multimodal Studies
Several multimodal traffic studies completed by JMT and Mead & Hunt support DDOT as the agency works on its moveDC goals. Each study demonstrates that, as DC expands its bus and bicycle facilities to provide more equitable and environmentally friendly transportation options, there is no “one size fits all” solution. A corridor needs to be analyzed individually, with a balance struck between all users of the street. The challenges faced must be overcome in a manner that serves the entire travelling public. These studies provide a crucial basis to carry these projects forward.
Merit Award
Florida Ave NE/New York Ave NE Intersection
DDOT turned a congested, dangerous intersection into a capital gateway, partnering with JMT to finalize a concept design and develop construction documents that incorporated public feedback. During the design process, the NoMa Parks Foundation (NPF) expressed a desire to make this hub of the Capital Gateway into a truly functional public space. With the input of an internationally-renowned landscape architecture firm (SWA/Balsley), DDOT, JMT, and NPF collaborated to provide the District with a new intersection meeting the needs of all users.
Congratulations to everyone associated with these award-winning projects in support of our Washington region clients!
