BWI Thurgood Marshall Runway Safety Area Program Wins Lighting Award
Alan Peljovich, along with URS and the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Aviation Administration (MDOT MAA), recently accepted honors for the new lighting systems at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.
The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, Aviation Lighting Committee, named the recently designed and installed systems to the Runway 10-28 Safety Area, Pavement Management & Standards Compliance Project at BWI Thurgood Marshall as the winner for its Air Carrier Award.
Airfield lighting and signage infrastructure at BWI Thurgood Marshall are being replaced with new LED systems as part of a larger Runway Safety Area (RSA) program effort. The RSA Program is a series of improvements at BWI Thurgood Marshall that will ensure compliance with Federal Runway Safety Area requirements while simultaneously addressing pavement rehabilitation needs and compliance with current design standards. The service lives of these LED systems significantly reduce maintenance requirements and runway/taxiway closures, thus improving safety while providing a more energy efficient airfield. Replacements have included runway centerline and touchdown zone lights, as well as taxiway centerline and edge lights.
JMT served as the program manager and URS served as designer for the MDOT MAA project.
