H Street – Benning Road Streetcar Service Opens in DC
On Saturday, February 27, the long-awaited 2.2-mile H Street – Benning Road Streetcar went into revenue service, providing the first streetcar service in Washington, DC since 1962.
The grand opening celebration included speeches from the DC Mayor, Members of Congress, the DC City Council, and community and business leaders, who all lauded the positive benefits of the project. Hundreds of DC residents waited for their first ride on the streetcar.
JMT played a major role in this high profile design-build project as the designer for significant portions. Design efforts started in 2011 with award of the design-build project to the Dean-Facchina Joint Venture, which included JMT and SYSTRA as the principal design firms. Our involvement will continue until the permanent car barn/training center is completed in late 2016.
