The annual professional football draft is being held in Philadelphia, April 27-29. City leaders and football officials expect up to 200,000 sports fans and their families to descend on the Center City area. JMT helped the City prepare traffic control plans in support of both this nationally-televised event and the 63,000 vehicles that typically enter this area daily.

The mass of spectators joins representatives of the 32 teams, college players hoping to be selected by one of the teams during the annual draft, and national and international media. The event, once held in a single day in a hotel conference room, has grown into a three-day celebration of football to include festival-style activities across a 50-acre urban footprint.

JMT assisted the City’s Department of Streets to plan and design traffic control measures, such as lane and road closures. We developed a four-phase strategy to minimize impacts on major thoroughfares. Traffic restrictions were implemented as needed to establish the event perimeter, an area estimated to be as large as 25 football fields.

Charlie Denny, JMT’s project manager for this assignment, and his team relished the challenge that the City provided.
