On October 13, JMT celebrated the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Fairmont Heights High School in Hyattsville, MD with Prince George’s County Public Schools staff and school alumni.  Dignitaries from the county and state offices honored the community that was actively involved with the construction of the $80-million building replacement.

The new 193,000-square-foot school with a capacity for 961 students replaces a building constructed in 1950, and was designed to achieve LEED® Gold certification. The school offers general education courses, as well as academies for environmental sciences, information technology, and performing arts. The facility has baseball, softball, and soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, a football stadium with synthetic field turf and a track, a gymnasium, and wrestling practice room.

Architectural features include a brick and metal panel façade, terrazzo floors, polished concrete floors, athletic wood flooring, metal roofs, and green roofs. The structure is rated for seismic Class B loading with both steel and masonry bearing sections. Other features include an emergency power generator, foam-sprayed exterior cavity walls for an enhanced thermal envelope, and a geothermal system with wells under the baseball field to provide tempered water for the HVAC systems. Several rainwater collection features were built to reduce water runoff from the site. Two green roofs minimize water runoff, and the athletic wing has a rainwater collection system that provides water for the toilet fixtures.

JMT provided construction management services throughout the past two years, including quality assurance, schedule reviews, budget and cash flow analysis, pay application reviews, and change order negotiations. The project team provided coordination of utilities as well as integration of IT systems with life safety and security systems in time to open the building for the beginning of the school year. Finishing with furniture, fixtures, and equipment coordination, move-in assistance, and monitoring occupancy inspection progress, JMT team members never lost focus on the key elements to opening the building on time.
