Custer Road (FM2478) is an urban arterial in McKinney, TX, a fast-growing city north of Dallas. To keep pace with local development, Custer Road needed to be widened to six lanes with turn lanes. Kennedy Consulting, Inc., a JMT Company, completed final design for this 3.8-mile, $36-million project between US 380 and Stonebridge Drive.

KCI was responsible for providing PS&E under an accelerated schedule, as well as the finalization of right-of-way determinations and participation in a Meeting of Affected Property Owners/Environmental Assessment re-evaluation. The geometric design was developed and intersection improvements were completed at several major and minor arterial crossings. The design required layout and design for 30,000 SF of retaining walls and more than 29,000 LF of storm sewer. Staff provided utility coordination and conflict analysis, as well as coordination of the traffic control phasing, which included the use of high, early strength concrete paving to expedite construction and minimize disruption to local traffic, and minimal night time construction near dense residential neighborhoods immediately adjacent to the project.

Extensive communication with City staff and adjacent property owners helped lead to a successful widening project on Custer Road.
