NBIS Bridge Inspections for City of Baltimore
NBIS Bridge Inspections for City of Baltimore
JMT led a joint venture team responsible for a cycle of NBIS condition inspections for more than 50 bridges, 34 of which were performed directly by JMT inspectors. We provided NBIS condition inspection, overall project management, and QA/QC review of work completed by subconsultants.
Structure types included: fracture critical and non-fracture critical steel beams and girders, steel through trusses, reinforced concrete slabs and beams, and masonry arches. Several bridges and associated ramps carried I-83 traffic over waterways and city roads. For these bridges, JMT coordinated maintenance of traffic and access equipment to minimize disruption to the traveling public. JMT also coordinated and performed hands-on inspection of bridge spans over various railroads, including electrified Amtrak, MTA light rail, Norfolk Southern, and CSX.
Our inspectors:
Documented inspection findings
Assigned bridge/culvert element condition ratings
Evaluated PONTIS element condition states
Presented repair/maintenance recommendations and associated costs
Evaluated scour conditions and described channel soundings
Reviewed and updated structure inventory & appraisal data
Submitted inspection reports directly to the client inspection manager
When a severe condition or safety issue was observed during the inspections, a letter of concern was written and sent to the client inspection manager, along with recommendations for emergency remedial action. Detailed dimensions were obtained in the field in order to develop emergency repair designs, if requested.
