BWI Marshall Runway Intersection Project Honored
JMT received an Honor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies/Maryland (ACEC/MD) at the ACEC/MD 2012 Awards Banquet on February 16, 2012, for our efforts as the program managers for the BWI Marshall Airport Runway Intersection project. This project also won a Maryland Quality Initiative Modal Award of Excellence earlier this month.
The Maryland Aviation Administration engaged JMT to assist the agency in an overall runway safety area enhancement program over several years. The intersection of Runways 10-28 and 15R-33L at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is the key junction between the two most heavily-used runways at one of the busiest airports in the country. Rehabilitating this intersection is a once-in-a-generation effort.
As the Program Manager, JMT was responsible for ‘directing traffic’ among all of the participants through multiple conceptual iterations. Successful execution of this major rehabilitation while keeping BWI Marshall Airport in operation required more than two years of constant coordination with numerous stakeholders, precision adherence to conceptual designs, phasing, and budgets, innovative design approaches, and an unwavering focus on safety.
ACEC/MD, with headquarters in Baltimore, is a nonprofit association of over 80 multi-sized consulting engineering firms located throughout the state serving the public and private sectors. ACEC/MD is affiliated with the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), headquartered in Washington, DC.
