State Route 145 in Whitehall Township just outside Allentown supports a mix of commuters and local shoppers flanked by commercial and industrial trucks. Our client sought to complete a roadway widening and reconstruction project that placed a strong emphasis on safety.

Approximately one and one-quarter miles of Route 145 were upgraded. The roadway profile was flattened considerably by removing bridges over former rail lines. Eliminating some jug handle turns also improved safety and accessibility. Improvements included widened travel lanes, dedicated left-turn lanes, concrete median barriers, and reconstruction of the intersection at Lehigh Avenue.

JMT provided construction inspection and documentation for this project, ensuring that the contractor followed the project schedule. Our inspection staff witnessed and documented the material testing that was performed on the project to ensure that all material was placed in accordance to PennDOT specifications. JMT inspected the daily maintenance and protection of traffic and monitored the safety of the project to both the workers and the traveling public. We expedited the resolution of some problems that were not resolved prior to the start of construction with some development projects along the route. The quick resolution of the problems led to a savings to our client for work that would have to be redone later.

In 2014, PennDOT honored JMT with a Silver Boot Award for outstanding project delivery. The award is given annually to two selected projects demonstrating the best construction teams.
